This event was a distinctive feature of the opening exercises. It was a double race of a chariot and a sprinter. The owner of the chariot held the reigns while the sprinter leaped in and out of the chariot, and at the end ran for goal. (Ferg., p. 294) Anabatai, according to Pausanias, may have been introduced in 496 B.C. (Harris, p. 158)
